Khan’s resurgence began a year ago with a noteworthy cameo in the otherwise average superhero flick “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.” Then, in January, he took the box office by storm with the lead role in “Pathaan,” a thrilling spy movie and the latest installment in the Yash Raj cinematic universe. “Jawan” is likely to captivate Khan’s loyal fans and even attract new viewers, thanks to his charismatic performance, now with even more conviction and polish.
“Jawan” was produced by Khan and his wife Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment production company. “Jawan” hurtles from one twist to another at a breakneck pace, almost overshadowing the familiarity and eventual predictability of its story and set pieces. Some plot twists are easy to anticipate. Azad develops a romantic relationship with Narmada and wins over her impressionable ten-year-old daughter Suji (played by Seeza Saroj Mehta). He publicly denounces various government officials, combating their corruption through a series of bloody but attention-grabbing demonstrations. Azad becomes the voice of the common people while displaying erratic behavior, even performing a soft-shuffle dance amid terrified commuters. He proudly and passionately explains that he is, in fact, a good guy fighting against the real enemies: public servants who fail to serve the republic.
A complex and delightfully absurd subplot connects Narmada and Azad’s storyline with the film’s opening scene set 30 years earlier in an unnamed village, possibly in Tibet near “India’s border,” oppressed by Asian soldiers sporting star-studded green caps.
